Hello,
I have been using the HP programmable calculators for a long time, and I have an HP50G with the StreamSmart 400 datalogger and fourier sensors.
I have been thinking about buying the HP Prime, and it would be great to be able to use the datalogger with the Prime.
Now I see that there is a different version of the StreamSmart, the '410' version, which seems to me quite similar in specs, only with the following differences:
- using a LiIon battery instead of a 9V block
- omtting the serial cable, only using USB
For the rest the unit looks the same, has the same connections to sensors, etc.
Since the Streamsmart 400 also has USB connectivity, I am hoping that it will be compatible with the HP prime, if I use an USB cable to connect.
Would you be able to check this with HP?

Peter Mansvelder
Hi Peter,

Unfortunately, the SS400 will not work with Prime, simply because the cables don't match. The Fourier sensors do work with both versions of course but if you want to use datalogging on a Prime, you would need to order a new version of StreamSmart, the 410 option.

Let me know in case you're interested and I will make sure you receive a special offer for this so you don't have to pay twice the full amount.

Hello Klaas,

But the cable option seems the same as with the SS410: an mini-to-micro-USB cable for connection between the SS410 and the HP Prime. The only difference I see between the SS400 and the SS410 is the lack of the serial cable, which means the SS410 won't work with the HP50G. Still, I see a lot of conflicting images on the net, including a device which looks exactly like the SS400 (including serial cable and on/off switch), but with 'HP Streamsmart 410' printed on it...
Based on more reliable info, it seems the differences are:
Code:
Item             SS400              SS410
=================================================
Battery:         9V replaceable     LiIon rechargable
On/Off switch    Yes                No
Serial cable     Yes                No
LED              Power              Activity
=================================================

Otherwise, they seem the same. So maybe my best option is just to buy the HP prime and check if my SS400 works.
Still, your offer sounds interesting, please let me know what you can offer.
Hi pmansvelder,

I took some pictures that might hopefully help you further!

Not entirely true. The cable seems the same, but is really different. The SS400 has a fixed cable with rectangle connection:

The SS410 has a separate USB cable with the mini-to-micro connection you mention:

Exactly true, they look the same:

Correct again, as can be seen here:

Our Benelux distributor http://www.derekenwinkel.nl has stock of the SS410 and if you order with code HPPRIME, they can offer you a 10% discount and free shipping. Hope it helps!

Dag Klaas,

I think you misunderstood me: as I can see from your pictures, there is no fixed cable on the SS410, only the USB cable, which is a loose cable, the same as with the SS400. So my guess would be that the SS400 works with the fixed cable on a HP50G (as I am using right now), and with the separate USB cable with the HP Prime, as I would like to test.
So my first idea would be to get an HP Prime, see if it works with my SS400, and if it doesn't, then I would be forced to buy a SS410 later.
The HP Prime seems a wonderful machine, but I am a little bit worried that it lacks the extensive RPL environment I have on the HP50G, and seems to be a luxury version of the HP39G/HP40G machines. So right now it is not so tempting an offer, I will wait to see if there will be either a firmware upgrade or a new version with a more professionally-minded set of functions.

Hi Peter, the SS400 has a fixed cable, with a connection that will not fit Prime as it has no mini-USB.

Yes, SS400 will work on 50G, but not on Prime as mentioned above. You cannot connect the loose cable from SS410 to SS400.
Hello Klaas,

The SS400 has a USB interface like the SS410. With the SS400 I can connect a PC using this USB interface, with a standard USB cable (It is described in the manual, I have tried this, and it works). If I use the correct cable (mini-to-micro USB), I should be able to connect the SS400 to an HP Prime. Why shouldn't this work? Like I said, it is worth a try, before I buy a SS410. Anyway, it would surely be much easier if I could just try this: take my SS400 and connect it to an HP Prime, and see if it is recognized. The only reason why it wouldn't work is when HP changed the USB id and/or the protocol used, but my guess is that this is not the case. Do you have any suggestions where I could try this out?

Peter

Hi Peter,

I've tried this, but my Prime keeps giving me a 'not connected' message:

[attachment=28]

UPDATE: I have checked this with the development team, and they confirm the StreamSmart 400 is not compatible with Prime at all.
Hello Klaas,

thanks for the test, this was the thing I was curious about...
So I will have to buy a new SS410 if I want to use my probes with the Prime, that is good to know.
Thanks once again for all the effort.
